Why sexual and reproductive health and rights?
International sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are strongly linked to gender equality and the human rights of all people.
SRHR recognises the right of all people to have control over and make informed decisions on matters related to their bodies, sexuality, and reproduction, free from coercion, discrimination, and violence.
SRHR encompasses all matters related to gender, puberty, relationships, sexual health, fertility, and birth. It underpins gender equality and the human rights of women, girls, and people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and/or expressions, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC).
When people do not have access to safe sexual and reproductive health information and services and their rights are not realised, hard-won gains for gender equality and inclusion are threatened. Unfulfilled SRHR reduces young women’s ability to access education and employment opportunities; to build individual assets; and to contribute to households and communities.
